The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. Brooks Hamilton was born in Boston in 1918. He was graduated from Bates College in 1941 with a B.A. in government and did graduate work at Boton University and Brown University. Before joining the University of Maine staff in 1952 he served as city editor of the Daily Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
